DETAIL SPECIFICATION SHEET
CONNECTOR, HULL INSERTS, TYPE VII
This specification is approved for use by the Naval Sea Systems Command and is available for use by all
Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense.
The requirements for acquiring the product described herein shall consist of this specification sheet and
MIL-DTL-24231.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Hull inserts are not furnished as part of cable connector assemblies. Acquisition of hull inserts is the
responsibility of the installing activity. Assurance that the hull insert adequately compensates for holes in
submarine pressure hulls is the responsibility of the installing activity.
2. Inserts shall be made of a material compatible with the applicable hull. Hull inserts shall be manufactured
from steel as follows:
a. For HY-80 steel hulls, steel grade HY-80 of T9074-BD-GIB-010/300 shall be used. The ends of inserts
shall be stamped with identification symbol "HY-80" in ¼-inch high letters. Welding and inspection of the hull
inserts shall be in accordance with T9074-AD-GIB-010/1688.
b. Ordinary strength steel hulls shall use Grade A or B of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Rules for
Building and Classing Steel Vessels, Part 2, Section 1 (with the supplementary requirements in Appendix 2/D).
Higher strength steel hulls shall use EH-36 or the ABS Rules.
3. Internal dimensions, height dimensions, pin dowel dimensions, and the location shall be provided.
4. Nickel copper cladding indicated for gasket seat shall be provided.
5. All dimensions are in inches.
6. Tolerances shall be as follows, or as stated:
Decimals ±0.005 inch.
a.
Fractions ±1/64 inch.
b.
Angular dimensions ±½ degree.
